Hugh O’Reilly opened with a double bogey but then went from strength to strength to show the rest of the field a muddy pair of heels as he took the Wednesday Sweep with 34pts off 15. Although he plays well throughout the year, there is nothing Hugh likes more than mats, short tees, preferred lies and all things winter.
Johnny McEvoy took the runners-up spot with 32pts off 8 helped by birdies at 10 and 17. He opened and closed the month with runners-up prizes and squeezed a section prize in between so he is enjoying a very hot spell of golf at the moment.
Third place went to Brian Doley, another player who longs for the short cold days of the year which have seen him claim unlimited success. A birdie at 1 set him on his merry way to 32pts off 8.
The day’s gross prize went to John O’Neill with 24 gross pts, birdies at each side of the turn providing the best possible core to a round of golf. Having had the best gross score in the Seniors’ Open on the Monday, John will still be walking around in disbelief at having won two gross prizes in three days. His wife Margaret and the rest of the family must have had quite something to listen to this week.
