Brian Archer Memorial Trophy 13 June
David Erwin returned the day’s only round below par to take the Brian Archer Memorial Trophy with 43pts off 6. He had birdies at 2, 4 and 10, with bogeys at 3 and 15 bringing him home in just 69 shots for his best round of the year so far.
Another player appearing to hit form in time for the highlight of the season in a couple of weeks is Gavin Smyth and he took the runners-up prize with 40pts off 11. Despite a double bogey at 6, his birdies at 2 and 17 kept him in contention throughout and his 20 homeward pts were to prove decisive.
Sean Conlon led the field by a distance when he reached the turn with 23pts despite an NR at 6. Things went rather askew on his way home however and a double bogey at 11 and NR at 12 played their parts in restricting him to just 17pts to add to his outward total. In the end he took 3rd place with 40pts off 17 and he will be hoping this is the start of a return to the type of form he displayed about one year ago.
Richard Budd’s handicap appears to have been on an inexorable rise since the start of the year but his 39pts off 9 gave him both 4th place and reversed that upward trend.
Anselm Henry, 5, and Francis Tallon, 4, were tied on 37pts and on this occasion youth edged out experience when Anselm took 5th place on the back 9. Francis will no doubt regret his failure to score at the last which meant he had to settle for 6th place.
Ryan Harbinson opened and closed his round with birdies and despite a few hiccups in between, notably a double bogey at 7, his 3 over par round gave him 33 gross pts and the gross prize.
