CLUB SWEEP Sat. 13 October
After a season which saw so many of our young guns come to the fore, the club’s last qualifying competition of the year produced a touch of nostalgia when one of the old hands came out on top.The dreadful conditions had seen the entry fall to just 43 competitors and the CSS soar to 73, and it took all of veteran Gerard Henderson’s experience to cope with the consequent challenges and take victory with 39pts off 13. This reduced his handicap to 11.2 and will see him compete in the low section for the duration of the winter while his playing partners will battle it out in higher divisions.
The runners-up spot went to Gerard Hoy with 37pts off 6. Gerard has been on the edge of Category 1 all season and will be delighted that this last qualifying event of the year saw his handicap fall to 5.1 and make that last minute breakthrough.
Keith Percy had disappointingly moved out of Category 1 and just 3 weeks ago was playing off 6. Four strong returns since then have reduced him to 4.3 and his 35pts on Saturday gave him 3rd place and a very pleasing end to the season.
The gross prize went to Gary Clarke after a round of 73. He had two birdies and two bogeys but his triple bogey at the supposedly easy 10th hole stood out like a sore thumb. This was his only triple bogey of the year and it came at the easiest hole on the last day.
