Derek Woods followed up his victory in the August Seniors’ Open by lifting September’s with 39pts off 24. Despite NRs at 4 and 13, a total of 8 nett birdies brought success to this battling left hander. The runners-up spot went to Ernie Barr from Portadown with 39pts off 25. Having done very little wrong over the first 14 holes, an NR at 15 saw him miss out on the back 9.
After 9 holes Laurence McGrady would have been disappointed with just 16pts having used up his entire 5 handicap. A level par run home saw him add a further 20pts to his score to take third place with 36pts holding off the challenges of three formidable players called John on the back 9.
John Hartnett, 6, will remember his 4 putts at the 16th for some time to come. John O’Neill had a multitude of birdie putts but the only one to drop was at the 13th. John Forrester was in the overall lead at the turn with 20pts but was disappointed to score only 16pts coming home.
One of the biggest winners on the day was Eamon McCausland whose birdie 2 at 8 was the only two in the competition.
