Club Captain 2018 Barry Mulholland
It is an honor and privilege to accept the role of Club Captain and follow in the long line of distinguished past Captains who have contributed so much to the success of Lurgan Golf Club.
In this context I would wish to pay tribute to our Captain last year, Mr Chris Stevenson, for all of his personal dedicated time, work and commitment, and to all the Council members, who have also worked tirelessly in the interest of the Club and the members.
I look forward very much to carrying out the role of Captain and representing the Club this incoming year. I only hope I can do this to the high standards set by my predecessors. I certainly know that I will be very well assisted by the Vice Captain Neil Dillon and others.
I really enjoyed my year as Vice Captain, a year in which I personally witnessed the Men’s Senior Cowdy team narrowly defeating Omagh in the Final of what was a very tough competition up in Tyrone.
Our teams have been growing in strength year on year and we are hoping they all go the extra mile this season and bring home more silverware for our trophy cabinet. I would also wish our ladies teams well as they build on their fantastic successes of 2017. Taking Lurgan Golf Club all the way to the All-Ireland finals with their Senior Foursomes and Junior Cup teams.
I am certainly looking forward to visiting as many other courses as possible when supporting our teams during the competition season and hope that our members turn out to support the clubs Ladies and Gents teams in all their challenges.
The course continues to develop and improve no small thanks to the expertise and hard work of the Head Greens Keeper Neil Gordon, his staff, and our greens conveyor Tom Douglas. There is no doubt our course and facilities are outstanding, with the golf academy recognised as a GUI Centre of Excellence. We sport a first class pro shop supported by Peter, Lynne and staff. Also many congratulations to Peter in his continuing role with the PGA. This is indeed a great honour for Peter, his family and also for our Club.
Our restaurant facilities are a phenomenal success thanks to the efforts of Micky, Colleen and their staff, who along with Stevie and our very own top quality bar team who look after us all very well.
Also my appreciation to Muriel, Hannah and Grainne, the office team who are always there to help members and to ensure the smooth running of the Club.
I would also wish to acknowledge the work of our last years Ladies Captains Joy Stevenson, who again did a brilliant job and who, working in partnership with her husband and Club Captain Chris ensured excellent leadership throughout the year. Joys work is now handed over to this years Ladies Captain, Elaine Bell a member of great experience and respect. I look forward to working with Elaine and again wish all the best for the Ladies Branch and their continued success this year.
Again I want to acknowledge the dedication of our President, Paddy Meehan and Lady President, Olwyn Forrester. I appreciate fully all the commitment that goes with these roles and wish both of them well.
Like all Captains before me I take great pride in Lurgan Golf Club and what it has achieved over the years, and I know this is shared by our membership. Long may this tradition continue.
I look forward to meeting as many members as possible over the next year, and its my hope that everyone will have a very enjoyable year of golf.
Club Captain 2018
Lady Captain 2018 Elaine Bell
I feel extremely proud and privileged to be Lady Captain in the quasquicentennial year of Lurgan Golf Club. I thank Joy Stevenson the outgoing Lady Captain for honouring me with this exciting opportunity.
There are so many reasons that Lurgan is such a successful club – the fabulous 18 holes so well maintained by our dedicated Green keeping team, the enthusiasm of our teams ably encouraged by their Captains, the continued growth in ladies taking up the game of golf and of course the beautiful view from Bunker 43 while enjoying some refreshments after a few holes.
In the celebratory year for Lurgan I look forward to working with the Ladies committee in continuing the development of the Ladies Branch within the Club.
I wish Barry Mulholland a successful year as Captain and look forward to working with him to make this year special for all our members.
I wish you all an enjoyable and happy golfing season and remember – half of golf is fun, the other half is putting!
Yours in golf
Lady Captain Elaine
