Among the big scorers over the last few winters has been Walter Simpson and he scored 46pts yesterday to continue that trend and take the Wednesday Sweep. A birdie at 9 brought a rather special front 9 to a close and saw him head to the 10th tee weighed down with 26pts in his pocket. A further birdie at 17 was the highlight of a steady back 9. The birdie at 9 was his second in a row at that hole, and having eagled it just a few weeks ago he must be finding it ‘wee buns’ at the moment.
Bryan Turkington rediscovered that ‘golden touch’ last winter and has maintained it ever since. He had 11 pars and 7 bogeys yesterday for 42pts and second place and we can expect to see him feature week in, week out for at least the next few months.
Third place went to Maurice Turnbull with 41pts off 24, his strong back 9 helping him to edge in front of two others on a similar total.
Nicky Campbell was one of those two players, but his level par round gave him 36 gross pts and the day’s gross prize. Bogeys at 5 and 6 were balanced by birdies at 9 and 14, and his 1 under par homeward run was just enough to hold off the challenge of Francis Tallon who also returned a level par score.
The extremely consistent Joe Dowey was unlucky to miss out after returning 41pts off 7. Three birdies and three bogeys brought him to the turn in level par and a 2 over par back 9 saw him come up tantalisingly short.
Sean Wilson had 40pts off 12, with Jim McCann Jnr, Sean McClean, John Richardson and David Erwin a point back on 39pts.
