Wednesday Sweep 27 June
On one of the hottest days ever experienced on the course, new Granda Brian Robinson rolled back the years with his best score in some time to win the Wednesday Sweep with 41pts off 20. His 4pt winning margin was the clearest of the season to date and earned him a two shot handicap reduction.
Brian Speers came second with 37pts off 4. Despite birdies at 1 and 4, his 6 outward bogeys saw him reach the turn with a modest 16pts. Four birdies over the last 6 holes helped bring him home in 1 under par and 21pts over the back 9 gave him the edge in a tight finish.
The ever youthful Keith Percy took 3rd place also with 37pts, off 6. Six bogeys, and a birdie at 10, reflected a very steady round and signalled a return to Category 1 from which he had been absent for just two rounds of golf.
Three players finished with 36pts to contest the next three places. Gerard Hoy, 6, took 4th place courtesy of his 10pts over the last 6 holes and his handicap reduction leave him at 5.6 and on the verge of Category 1.
David Herron, 13, came next and will have more cause for regret than most after a triple bogey, double bogey, bogey finish left him somewhat aghast at the end of his round.
Robert Emerson, 1, had birdies at 4, 9, 16 and 17 on his way to a round of 71, but four homeward bogeys saw him finish in 6th place.
Nathan McCann had an eagle at 4, birdies at 1 and 18, and bogeys at 3, 6 and 15 for a 1 under par round of 69, 37 gross pts and the day’s gross prize. Nathan’s handicap has gone from +0.2 to -0.4 in a very short time space of time and it is most likely to plunge still further in the coming months.
