After an unaccustomed spell in the golfing doldrums, Marty Rea appeared in the prizes for the third time in a row when he lifted yesterday’s Wednesday Sweep with 41pts off 11.
He can thank his specialist chipping club, sometimes referred to as his magic wand, and a hot putter for his latest victory.John Hartnett’s 23 outward pts set him firmly on the road to victory and he remained on that road until a double bogey at 14 led to 18pts on the back 9 and the runners-up spot. A run of outward birdies at 4, 6 and 8 dried up over the rest of his round.
Three players returned 40pts with winter specialist Bryan Turkington’s 23 homeward pts claiming third prize, his birdies at 10 and 15 being the deciding factor. Club Captain Barry Mulholland, 17, and Johnny McEvoy, 11, were the unfortunate players to miss out on the back 9.
The gross prize went to Francis Tallon with 34 gross pts. It is not often the gross prize is won with a pair od NRs on the card, but his 5 birdies did just enough to counter the damage.
