Menary Cup

Updated: Jun 5, 2019

Yesterday, seventy seven ladies played for the Menary Cup, sponsored by Blackwater Gin. in variable, but mostly fine conditions. The course was in splendid order and the ladies were hoping to capture one of the lovely prizes on offer. Top prize on the day went to a lady who first captured this cup in 1989, Bronagh McKavanagh. Bronagh had just returned from a week in Dubrovnik and the holiday obviously did her a great deal of good as she toured the course in an impressive 40 points, cutting her handicap back to 10. Ten pars and birdies at 8 and 11 secured the top spot for her, a very fine round and great to see her return to form. The gross prize went to another of our impressive young players, with Niamh Ward this week taking the honours carding an impressive 34 gross points. Visitors from ten clubs across the province came to try their luck at Lurgan yesterday and two of the visitors claimed prizes. Section A winner was Linda Armstrong for Clogher Valley GC with 34 points, while our own Tara Walsh took the runner up spot in Section A, also with 34 points having just been pipped to the top prize on the better back nine. The honours in section B both went to Lurgan players, with Lady Vice-Captain Julie Jordan having a splendid 38 points to take the top spot. Runner up was Eleanor Turnbull, who has played some very consistent golf over the last couple of weeks and followed up last week's good score with another 37 points.

Section C was easily topped by Helen Stewart who also had a magnificent 40 points losing out to Bronagh by virtue of her having had a better back nine. She was nevertheless delighted by her score and the two shot chop off her handicap. Another visitor took the runner up spot, with Anne Smyth of Killymoon taking the honours here with 30 points.

The final two prizes on offer were for the front and back nines and these were won by Christine Hagan with 19 points and Roisin Anderson with 20 points respectively.

So all in all, a very successful day. It was great to see so many ladies at the prize giving.

So congratulations Lady Captain , Pat on the lovely selection of prizes and many thanks to our sponsors Blackwater Gin for helping to make the day a great success.
